Wolfgang Press

On signing to the 4AD label with Dead Can Dance in 1983, I discovered that one of our new labelmates - Wolfgang Press - featured an old school friend of mine , Mark Cox, who I'd lost contact with and not seen for eight years. A bond was re-established following which, on a couple of occasions when the Wolfies were in the studio, some incidental percussion was required and I got the call. I'm there in the background in The Wedding on their Big Sex EP, and Swing like a Baby on the album Bird Wood Cage.

Pieter Nooten and Michael Brook

In 1987 4AD label head Ivo Watts Russell brought together former Clan of Xymox keyboard player Pieter Nooten and Canadian guitarist/producer Michael Brook. The result was the lovely album Sleeps with the Fishes. For the track Time some additional percussion was required. Initially Michael hoped to create an unusual sound and effect with finger rhythms played on paper fans, but when we were unable to achieve what he was after, we resorted to my trusty bongos.

Piano Magic

Following separate meetings with me (in London) and Brendan Perry (in Ireland), Glen Johnson invited us both to contribute to songs being compiled for a new Piano Magic album, Ovations (2009). I played percussion on A Fond Farewell and yang ch'in (hammered dulcimer) on March of the Atheists and La Cobardia de los Toreros, all recorded in the Beggars Banquet in-house studio in Wandsworth.

Tenzin

I 'met' Lisa Tenzin-Dolma in 2006 via the MySpace page promoting my Enter the Mysterium album. We corresponded for many years - during which time I knew her principally as an author/writer - before she revealed her songwriting. Following an introduction at an open-mic session in Bath, Lisa enlisted Zac Ware - long time tour guitarist with The Proclaimers - to record her debut album, and I was invited to make some percussion contributions. I ended up working extensively on the album with them, playing on 13 of the 18 tracks on Echoes (2022).

I had a long association during their London-based era with Spyros Giasafakis and Evi Stergiou whose music is largely inspired by ancient Greek myths, legends and drama, and incorporates traditional folk instruments. I made a number of guest live appearances with them, and in 2013 contributed some percussion parts to the title track of their Psychostasia album.

Elektragaaz

Since wrapping up The Peter Ulrich Collaboration in 2019, Trebor Lloyd's principal project has been Elektragaaz - a cinematically-inspired rock-jazz-electronica fusion. I was invited to make a guest contribution of some incidental percussion to 2024 track Dreamspinner.

A project of these Piano Magic alumni, I contributed some percussion, ocarina and curious vocal grunts to a couple of tracks on their 2024 album The Allegory of Vanity.
